Dreamwidth posts are like buses - you wait days for one, then two come along at once!

But I have a question about commenting etiquette because I'm new here and don't know how things work yet.

What's the protocol for if I've read a post, and I enjoyed it but I don't actually have anything to say - but I want you to know I read it and enjoyed it.

On other social media sites there's the option to 'like' a post but that isn't something here.

What do I do?!

Unfortunately, there's not something like that on Dreamwidth (to my knowledge - I'm new too!). I wish there was, but I also appreciate the level of engagement that comment only system creates.

I don't know anything about official etiquette, but... you're certainly not obliged to comment on everything. I see lots of people just leave brief, affirming comments, without engaging much with the content. Personally, I sometimes just leave an emoji, for exactly that purpose.

Emoji are perfectly good responses if you want to leave something but don't really have words. Some of my favorites for quick-response:

<3 (the good old heart)
^_^ or :) (basic smile)
^_^b (thumbs up)
*_* (starry eyes)
\o/ (arms up / 'yay!')

A heart is probably the most direct equivalent of a like, in Dreamwidth dialect.

If you're super worried check the person's journal to see if they have a sticky posted about their comment guidelines. Some people don't like others commenting. Most of the time though if I do comment it'll be something like "oh that's interesting, thanks for sharing" or just a heart like so ♥

I comment a lot to help people feel others are actually reading and not just ignoring all of their posts. ;)

I think, if you would like to really express it, a simple "I really enjoyed this post!" and maybe a well wish would suffice. (-: if not, like others have commented, emoji is a nice, simple way to emote and does the work neatly, I think.

It's okay to comment to just say "Yes, I liked this!"

Though some people have gotten paid accounts in order to make little ticky box polls on every post.
